Upgrading your water heater is one of the smartest ways to lower energy costs and improve your home’s efficiency. The good news? Pennsylvania homeowners may qualify for rebates, utility incentives, and federal tax credits that can significantly reduce the upfront cost.

If you’re considering a new water heater in the Lehigh Valley, here’s what you need to know.

Federal Tax Credits (Available to Pennsylvania Homeowners)

While Pennsylvania does not currently offer a statewide rebate specifically for water heaters, homeowners can take advantage of federal incentives through the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

You may qualify for:

  • 30% tax credit (up to $2,000) on qualifying heat pump water heaters
  • Available through 2032
  • Applies to both equipment and installation costs (in most cases)

These high-efficiency systems can dramatically reduce energy usage compared to traditional units.

Utility Rebates Available in Pennsylvania

Depending on your utility provider, you may be eligible for additional savings when upgrading your water heater.

FirstEnergy (Met-Ed, Penelec, Penn Power, West Penn Power)

  • Up to $500 rebate for ENERGY STAR® heat pump water heaters
  • Must meet program requirements and be submitted within 90 days of purchase

UGI Utilities

  • $400 rebate for qualifying natural gas tankless water heaters
  • ENERGY STAR® certification required

Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania

  • $400 rebate for high-efficiency tankless gas water heaters (UEF ≥ 0.90)
  • Additional rebates may be available for other efficiency upgrades

PPL Electric Utilities

  • Up to $400 rebate for ENERGY STAR® heat pump water heaters
  • Must meet minimum efficiency ratings

What Qualifies for Rebates?

Most rebate programs require:

  • ENERGY STAR® certified equipment
  • Minimum efficiency ratings (UEF requirements vary)
  • Installation in a primary residence
  • Timely application submission with proof of purchase

Because requirements can vary, it’s important to confirm eligibility before purchasing.

Why Upgrading Your Water Heater Makes Sense

In addition to rebates, energy-efficient water heaters offer:

  • Lower monthly utility bills
  • Faster recovery times (especially with gas systems)
  • Longer system lifespan
  • Reduced environmental impact

For many homeowners, the long-term savings outweigh the initial investment—especially when incentives are applied.

Professional Installation Matters

To qualify for rebates and ensure safe operation, proper installation is critical. This is especially true for:

  • Gas water heaters (venting and gas connections)
  • Tankless systems (sizing and flow rate setup)
  • Heat pump systems (location and airflow requirements)

Incorrect installation can reduce efficiency—or even void rebate eligibility.

How to Claim Your Rebate

  1. Confirm your utility provider and available programs
  2. Choose a qualifying water heater
  3. Have the system professionally installed
  4. Submit your rebate application with required documentation
