Early spring in Pennsylvania and New Jersey brings warmer temperatures, steady rain, and homeowners heading back outside for yardwork. It’s also the time of year we get calls about one specific issue:

A hose bib dripping.

If your outdoor faucet (also called a spigot) is leaking after winter, you’re not alone. Freeze-thaw cycles can stress plumbing systems, and small issues often show up right when temperatures start climbing into the 50s and 70s.

Here are five of the most common reasons your hose bib is dripping in spring — and when it’s time to call a plumber.

1. Freeze Damage From Winter

Even if your hose bib didn’t burst during the coldest days of winter, it may still have developed small cracks.

When water freezes, it expands. That expansion can:

  • Crack the internal valve

  • Damage the pipe inside the wall

  • Weaken connections

Sometimes the leak doesn’t show up until you turn the water back on in spring. A steady drip after winter is often a sign of freeze damage inside the fixture or supply line.

If you notice water dripping from behind the siding or inside the basement wall, that’s a stronger sign the pipe itself may be compromised.

2. Worn Washer or Packing Nut

Many traditional hose bibs use a rubber washer that compresses when you turn the handle off. Over time, that washer wears down.

Spring temperature swings can cause the metal parts to expand and contract, which may loosen the packing nut or worsen an already worn washer.

If the leak is coming from:

  • Around the handle → likely a packing issue

  • From the spout even when fully closed → likely a worn washer

This is usually a minor repair — but ignoring it can waste a surprising amount of water over a few weeks.

3. Hose Left Attached Over Winter

One of the most common causes of spring hose bib leaks is leaving a garden hose connected during freezing weather.

When a hose is attached, water gets trapped inside the faucet. That trapped water freezes and expands, often cracking the internal components.

Even frost-free hose bibs can fail if a hose was left connected.

If your outdoor faucet drips only after turning it on this season, winter hose attachment may be the culprit.

4. High Water Pressure After Seasonal Changes

As irrigation systems turn back on and homeowners begin outdoor water use, pressure fluctuations can occur.

If your home already has slightly elevated water pressure, spring usage can expose weak points in older outdoor fixtures.

A dripping hose bib may actually be a symptom of pressure stress. If you’ve noticed other signs like:

  • Faucet hammering

  • Leaks elsewhere

  • Running toilets

It may be worth checking overall system pressure.

5. Loose or Failing Connection Inside the Wall

Sometimes the leak you see outside isn’t the real problem.

In some cases, the threaded connection where the hose bib attaches to the interior pipe begins to loosen or corrode. When this happens, water can leak inside the wall cavity first — and eventually show up outside.

Warning signs include:

  • Water stains in the basement ceiling

  • Damp drywall near the spigot location

  • Musty smells near exterior walls

This is when a simple drip can turn into structural damage if not addressed quickly.

When Is a Dripping Hose Bib an Emergency?

Call a plumber promptly if you notice:

  • Water leaking inside the home

  • A sudden increase in your water bill

  • Cracks in the exterior fixture

  • No water flow when turned on

  • Water spraying from behind siding

Spring plumbing issues can escalate quickly — especially after a freeze-thaw cycle.

Can You Fix It Yourself?

Some minor leaks caused by worn washers or packing nuts can be repaired. However, if freeze damage or internal pipe cracking is involved, replacement is often the safest long-term solution.

Modern frost-free hose bibs are designed to reduce future winter damage and are a worthwhile upgrade if your fixture is older.
