A running toilet is one of those household plumbing issues that can quickly go from annoying to expensive. Even a small, constant flow of water can waste hundreds of gallons per day, leading to a noticeable increase in your water bill. The good news is that most running toilet problems are caused by a few common internal tank issues—and some of them are simple to fix.

Inside your toilet tank, there are a few key parts working together every time you flush. When one of these components isn’t working correctly, water may continue to run into the bowl long after the flush is complete. The most common culprits are the fill tube, flapper chain, or flapper itself.

Common Causes of a Running Toilet

When you remove the lid from your toilet tank while it’s running, you can usually identify the problem by watching how the parts move. Here’s what to look for:

  • Fill tube issues
The fill tube is responsible for directing water into the overflow tube when refilling the tank. If it is misaligned or constantly siphoning water, it can cause continuous running.
  • Flapper chain problems
The chain connects the flush handle to the flapper. If it is too tight, the flapper may not fully seal. If it’s too loose, it may get caught under the flapper, also preventing a proper seal.
  • Worn or damaged flapper
The flapper is a rubber seal at the bottom of the tank. Over time, it can warp, crack, or become coated with mineral buildup, preventing it from sealing properly and allowing water to leak continuously into the bowl.

Simple Troubleshooting Steps

Before calling a plumber, there are a few quick checks you can do that often solve the problem:

  • Check that the flapper is sitting flat and sealing properly
  • Adjust the chain length so there is a slight amount of slack (not too tight, not too loose)
  • Make sure the fill tube is securely attached and not pushing water directly into the overflow tube
  • Inspect the flapper for wear, warping, or mineral buildup

In many cases, simply adjusting the chain or replacing a worn flapper can stop the running water immediately.

When to Call a Plumber

If you’ve made these adjustments and your toilet is still running, there may be a deeper issue with the fill valve or internal tank components that need professional attention. A licensed plumber can quickly diagnose the problem and replace any faulty parts to restore proper function and prevent water waste.

A running toilet might seem like a small issue, but fixing it promptly can save water, money, and frustration over time.
